By now you are probably already familiar with the Samsung OmniaHD. But without official wording from the company, a few things still haven’t been made clear. While it still hasn’t been stated which mobile OS this new smartphone will really use, a bit more info about it and its features have been revealed by Samsung before their press event at Barcelona.

According to Samsung, the Samsung OmniaHD will be the world’s first HD-video capture capable phone, sporting an 8 megapixel camera that supposedly captures 720P HD video. It will have a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, which should be able to do the HD content it will record justice. That much, Samsung has revealed, but I think we can pretty much agree that it will have GPS, Wi-Fi, ample amount of built-in storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Those are staple features, after all, that any new competing smartphone in this day and age shouldn’t be released without. Of course, I could be wrong, but pray I’m not.

Apple will start selling a cheaper, 'entry-level' iPhone sometime this summer, for around $99 after subsidy, according to "checks," RBC analyst Mark Abramsky said in a note this morning.

* The main cost reductions would come from fewer features -- not a crappy 'iPhone nano' or something without a multi-touch screen. Abramsky thinks it might have a lower-resolution camera, no 3G Internet access or GPS, and a cheaper data plan (~$15/month) with a usage cap. We agree that lowering the monthly bill would help drive iPhone sales, but carriers won't be thrilled.
* Meanwhile, the iPhone 3G will get feature upgrades, such as a better camera, video capabilities. (See chart below.)
* He thinks Apple could sell 20-30 million of these cheaper iPhones in fiscal 2010, boosting Apple's smartphone market share to almost 20%.
* Cheaper iPhone will eat into iPhone 3G and iPod sales. And a lower subsidy and lower margins means Apple will have to sell three times as many to make the same gross profit from one iPhone 3G. He expects fiscal 2010 iPhone gross margins to shrink to 35%-37% from 50%+.

We agree that Apple will sell a $99 iPhone sometime this year. But we think he might be overestimating the damage to Apple's margins. For instance, he assumes that carriers will only subsidize it by $200, half as much as the iPhone 3G -- and about as much as they subsidize phones that drive zero data revenues. We think that might be a steep cut. But admittedly, this is guess work.

As this is a platform land grab, Apple should sacrifice some profitability for market share. But we don't see Apple stabbing itself -- that's not its style.

We expect the low-end iPhone to perform similarly to the current iPhone -- any significant reduction in capabilities would not be an iPhone. That said, removing 3G and GPS is plausible, but it would have to offer considerable cost savings. Last spring, research firm iSuppli told us that adding 3G and GPS to an iPhone would only cost about $20.

Meanwhile, we think the most logical high-end updates Apple could add now include more storage capacity, a better digital camera, more color choices, video recording, the ability to run multiple apps at once, and a more luxurious case.

We're going to see a lot of predictions about Apple's iPhone roadmap in the next few months, ranging from the underwhelming to the absurd. Abramsky's doesn't strike us as offbeat, but we're not sure that there's much of a reason to increase the iPhone's screen resolution -- that could mess up apps, and in its current size, wouldn't be much more useful than the phone's current resolution.

It is not an automatic feature so you have to choose the users manually you want to merge. It will be very useful if you don’t have duplicate contacts. I’m thinking of getting one because I’m curious of the touch interface. I prefer buttons, but that wish won’t be granted until the Nokia N97 comes in the next few months.

The European version has been out and Nokia even announced they’ve sold at least a million units of the Nokia 5800 already. Do you think it will be successful here in the US? Will you be getting one?

Cables are unsightly things, which is why wireless is the way to go in the world of computers and consumer electronics. Amazon launches its new Kindle 2 wireless reading device, the successor of the Kindle first gen. The Kindle 2 features a 6-inch E-Ink electronic paper display with 600 x 800 resolution at 167 ppi, 16-level gray scale, 2GB internal storage, and a 3.5mm stereo jack.

The Kindle 2 comes with integrated EVDO modem with fallback to 1xRTT for 3G connectivity. Other than Kindle AZW format, the Kindle 2 reads also TXT, Audible (formats 4, Audible Enhanced (AAX)), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; PDF, HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion.

Amazon Kindle 2 is really slim at only 0.3-inch and weighs just 10.2 ounces. It has a USB 2.0 port for charging and sync.

Anyone who knows me well enough knows how obsessed I am with F.E.A.R., a game I’ve played multiple times since its release in 2005. A slew of sequels sporting the F.E.A.R. name were released subsequently but none of them impressed as much as the original game since they weren’t being developed by Monolith. And then I heard the rights to the F.E.A.R. franchise had passed back to them and they would be the ones working on a full fledged sequel. Tears of happiness flowed.

Last week (or was it the week before that?) they were generous enough to release a single player demo that allowed us to sample nearly two levels of slow mo horrific action and for some reason it was somewhat of a downer.
Having played the first F.E.A.R. game on the PC I went straight up for the PC demo (demo is out on PSN and XBL as well) and nearly one and a half gigs later, I was ready to kick some undead kid arse. The demo started off from where F.E.A.R. ended so the city (where F.E.A.R. took place) has been devastated, Alma and her minions are free in the city once again and you play as one Michael Beckett who’s supposed to snuff her out once and for all.

As far as atmosphere is concerned the demo delivers. The first level took place in an abandoned school of sorts and had a good amount of scares to keep you on the edge of the seat but when it came down to the action I was pretty disappointed.
Now one of F.E.A.R.’s main draws (for me) was the over the top, John Woo inspired action. The exaggerated rag doll physics that kicked in as and when you decimated a soldier in slow motion with a shotgun or the way body parts flew all over the place never got old. In F.E.A.R. 2, it’s all gone. Shoot a solider in slow mo and he just slumps down or just slumps back minutely. Decapitation was pretty disappointing as well. Also environmental destruction has been scaled down to a certain extent and I never felt that wanton sense of satisfaction shooting up an empty room or lobbing a nade into it.

What irritated me further was the fact that weapons sounded like cheap fire crackers; something that’s a huge turn off in first person shooters. The shotgun from F.E.A.R sounded like one and packed a mean audio punch when fired. Nothing of the sort here.

And then there was the much hyped Mech section where you pilot a Mech and go to town on a bunch of soldiers and other Mechs and for some reason I nearly fell asleep during that sequence. It was that uninspiring!

And that one word pretty much summed up my feelings for the demo – Uninspiring. Sure it looked good and was creepy enough but it lacked the visceral gameplay that made me fall in love with F.E.A.R. nearly three years ago. They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its covers so I’m going to try and apply that proverb over here by not judging the game too harshly based on this demo.

Form Factor

The 9500’s build quality exudes a certain sturdiness with slim chromed lines and its brilliant 3.5-inch SurePress touchscreen display, which is anything but conventional and clearly visible even in broad daylight, is difficult to miss. It sports a resolution of 360 x 480 (184ppi) pixels and 65k colors with an accelerometer for screen rotation. Though it's 3G ready, video calling might be a bit of a problem considering there’s no secondary camera. The 3.2 megapixel AF camera comes with a single LED for a flash and is located at the back.

On one side of this slim device (that we thought to be a lot thicker from the previews) is a 3.5mm standard earphones socket, volume keys and a dedicated camera key. A customisable key that’s usually set to Voice Command is located on the other side with a micro USB port. Even though there seemed to be plenty of place for a hot swap slot, the Storm, like all other BlackBerry devices has its microSD card slot located under the rear panel (1GB card included with support for up to 16GB). Below the display are the traditional BlackBerry menu and Escape keys in between the call take (also used to access the dial pad) and the call end keys.

It’s a bit on the heavy side though (155g) and if shaken, you can hear the display move. There’s also a slight visible gap all around the screen. Nevertheless, it’s still a good looking piece of hardware.

Features and Performance

Interface

Running on a BlackBerry OS with a 624 MHz CPU, the Storm is decently quick, but like most other touchscreen handsets, it does have a few kinks that need to be worked out. There’s sometimes a bit of lag when it comes to typing in certain fields. The display uses what we’d like to call ‘Tap-Screen’ technology that basically implies you’ll have to actually press keys on the screen just like you would on a normal physical keypad with buttons. You can still swipe your finger over the screen for navigation though and this is one of the better features of the handset.

It has no support for handwriting recognition as it has no stylus for the same but there are three types of keypads – sure-type, alphanumeric and QWERTY that will by default show up when the handset is held in landscape. The accelerometer is not erratic but it is a bit too sensitive and there’s no control for that. It took us a little while to get used to the tap-screen display when using the keypads and like other similar touchscreen handsets you may end up hitting the wrong keys quite often till the action is mastered. The screen orientation will shift to landscape if turned to the left or the right.
The 3.25-inch screen of the Storm could've made way for a biger one for better display.

Samsung announced the new UltraTOUCH S8300 ahead of the Mobile World Congress 2009. The new UltraTOUCH S8300 is a touchscreen slider phone with a 2.8-inch AMOLED anti-scratch full touch screen. Measures only 12.7mm thick, the S8300 has a slide-out tactile 3×4 keypad.

New model digital camera called ES10 digital camera has been launched by Samsung. This model camera is the first one to join the ES series. Amazon is carrying the BlackBerry Storm for $99 without any rebate, which is a world of difference compared to the $249.99 with a $100 rebate that was offered earlier. This effort by Amazon could be the result of competition against Verizon’s own buy one get one free sale that is currently happening until the end of March. Of course, the $99 price tag comes with a 2-year new subscriber agreement, and you don't have to get bogged down by any paperwork or mail in forms to see the BlackBerry Storm drop by your doorstep.

Search for Hidden or System Files By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden or system files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
Click Start, click Search, click All files and folders, and then click More advanced options.

Click to select the Search system folders and Search hidden files and folders check boxes.

NOTE: You do not need to configure your computer to show hidden files in the Folder Options dialog box in Windows Explorer to find files with either the hidden or system attributes, but you need to configure your computer not to hide protected operating system files to find files with both the hidden and system attributes. Search Companion shares the Hide protected operating system files option (which hides files with both the system and hidden attributes) with the Folder Options dialog box Windows Explorer.
