Google is now very keen on introducing newer themes for its Google Chrome after adding wide range of themes to its iGoogle and Gmail. According to the news from New York Times, the illustrators and designers are not contacted by Google. The main reason for introducing the new themes is to bring a unique and exciting opportunity for artists to display their work in front of millions people.
Few recent builds for Google comprise the option to “Reset to default theme”, but at the same time, Google doesn’t offer a gallery of themes or some guidelines for creating our own theme.

LitPhone Calls And Projects Pictures Too

You know you've got a winner on your hands when the industry is abuzz with news of your latest hardware achievement, and in this case we're talking about SCT Optronics from China and their latest, the LitPhone. This is a GSM handset that comes with a built-in projector function, featuring a touchscreen display as well as the ability to receive CMMB broadcasts for you to enjoy just about anywhere you go as long as there is a strong enough reception. Other features of the LitPhone include a miniSD memory card slot and an A/V port, where the entire device measures just 122.4mm x 59.2mm x 21.1mm while tipping the scales at 190 grams. Stores that want to pick this up will have to place a minimum order of 1,000 units for $250 a pop. No idea on what the battery life will be like though.

Universal remote controls are tried and tested devices which we've seen plenty of to date, but along comes the Infinity Remote Control concept by Damien Crossan that was developed to fit the profile of a remote up to a decade from now. Apparently, this concept uses "4G" technology, is powered by lithium polymer batteries (presumably rechargeable) and boast flexible touchscreens. The remote is able to show a preview of whatever TV channel you choose, where you can then take the screen with you to various monitors located around your home. Not only that, it supposedly is able to have fun with your Wii as it comes with built-in motion control technology as well, although we think the Wii ought to have a successor by then to make the Infinity Remote Control obsolete, games-wise.

In a rather smart move, it looks like Nokia has updated its Nokia Software Update service to inform users of the main benefits of the firmware update that they’re planning on installing and in plain English too. When you sit back and think on it, it should really have been implemented from the get go, especially since more often than not, users are risking their phones being bricked by a mistake in the firmware upgrade process.

Would you like the Nokia 5800 to be more like Apple’s iPhone? Well, if this latest rumor is true, Nokia is looking to upgrade the touchscreen on future batches of its 5800 from resistive screens to capacitive screens (which are used by Apple’s iPhones). Resistive touchscreens require pressure and is more suited to stylus than finger input. There is no mention whether the upcoming Nokia N97 will be receiving the same treatment or not, but we certainly wouldn’t mind.

Microsoft has confirmed that an Xbox 360 "Game Of The Year" bundle coming up. The bundle is basically an Xbox 360 Elite with Halo 3 and Fable II. If you do the math, the games come for "free". This bundle is expected to be available in most markets, except Europe.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Google Inc.’s YouTube said Thursday it is vastly expanding its library of full-length movies and TV shows it offers online, while also launching a new advertising service and adding about a dozen new content partners.
The long-form videos will be housed on a unique page at http://www.youtube.com/shows and get a “Shows” tab on the main YouTube site. The offering, which went live late Thursday, marks a further departure from the fuzzy homemade clips that made the Web site popular and is the latest move in YouTube’s attempt to boost sales and profits. Last week, YouTube announced it was teaming up with Universal Music Group to create an online music video venture.
“It’s a first step in a long commitment,” said Shiva Rajaraman, a YouTube senior product manager, in a conference call with reporters.

The company hopes to add to its movie and show content over time. The titles available at launch are mostly older fare that are already available elsewhere on the Web. It will offer for free hundreds of TV show titles including “Beverly Hillbillies” and “Married With Children,” and hundreds of movies, including “Casino Royale” and “Cliffhanger.”

The service expands on YouTube’s existing partnership with several studios, whose parents include Sony Corp., Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., CBS Corp., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Liberty Media Corp.

On Thursday it also announced new partnerships with 13 smaller companies such as Discovery Communications Inc., National Geographic and SnagFilms LLC.

Advertising revenue will be shared with the content providers.
The news came on the same day Mountain View-based Google said it earned $1.42 billion, or $4.49 per share, in the first quarter, up 9 percent from a year ago.

Google bought YouTube for $1.76 billion in late 2006 but it hasn’t emerged as a major marketing vehicle and the company does not disclose its revenue figures. Analysts have estimated its revenue in 2008 at around $200 million.

On Thursday, YouTube spokesman Chris Dale simply said a recent analyst estimate that said the site lost $500 million a year was “factually incorrect” and said its performance was better.

As a way to bolster its ad revenue, YouTube also announced it is launching Google TV Ads Online, which will help advertisers target viewers of online content with video ads.

Single video ads are planned to be inserted in scheduled breaks in shows and movies, Rajaraman said. Sometimes the ads will be sold by Google and sometimes by the content providers.

Certain content providers also provide their own video players, such as Sony’s Crackle.com player, which will be embedded in the YouTube site.

Crackle.com has 60 movies on its site, but will be offering only 15 at time through the partnership. For example, “Groundhog Day,” initially will not be shared, as Sony managers intend to use YouTube’s large audience to help drive traffic to Crackle.com.

Pageonce, a Palo Alto company we have been following, will is releasing its Cell Minute Tracker, an application that wipes away the ugliness of cell phone bills with the beauty of the iPhone.

Starting tomorrow, Pageonce users will be able to access real-time minute balance, alerts, and bill payment at any time during the billing cycle, making it easy for individuals and families to track and manage minute usage.

Pageonce CEO, Guy Goldstein, cites multiple cases in which families were hit with exorbitant changes due to lack of visibility into the family’s cell minute and text usage.

The recent case of a Wyoming family who got hit with a $4,000 charge when their teenage daughter sent 10,000 texts in one month highlighted the importance of knowing how many minutes your family members are using before you receive your monthly statement.

Pageonce’s mobile app has some cool features. Beyond the standard bill and usage view, Pageonce will enable users to:

* Receive alerts when they’ve reached 90% of their minutes’ limit and when bills are due
* Breakdown information by family member
* View and pay phone bills directly from Cell Minute Tracker on the iPhone

As far as security is concerned, Pageonce has implemented 128 bit SSL encryption, insured by a top 10 A+ rated insurance carrier and a four digit passcode lock capability.

Google Maps has come out with new layer showing webcams. If you want to enable this feature click on “More” at the top, check the webcams box, and then click on New York (example). Then the image will bring your very recent snapshot, which has been shot in last 15 minutes.

This sounds like an April's Fools, but Intomobile has picked up a report from Ted Schadler, an analyst at Forrester that seems to think that the iPhone could be a real communication asset to companies. We did not fork the $749 required to read this gem, but according to Simon Sage from Intomobile, the report says that iPhones can save on many fronts: cost of the device (the employee buys it), the back-end infrastructure (no need for a Blackberry server), efficient web browsing.

The idea of removing the "Blackberry Tax" is not new at all: it was in fact the cornerstone of Windows Mobile's strategy when Push Email was introduced. Employees could use their own device, there's no need to have a Blackberry server and wireless data plan and so on... What the iPhone adds is better web browsing and shininess, we guess. By the way Nokia has support for Exchange too. Often, companies believe that Blackberry is more secure and employees end up in trench warfare with their IT department. There lies the real problem.

But we think that the lack of physical keyboard on the iPhone kills it for those who type a lot. Secondly, Blackberry has a much better deal on international data. Blackberry might be better in on-board data encryption too… that’s another story.

Folks in New York will be able to feast their eyes on a couple of robotic walking and lifting assistant exoskeletons from Honda Motor tomorrow, giving a glimpse into the future where humans will be endowed with artificially superhuman strength. The first prototype will be a wearable device that helps the aged as well as those who suffer from weakened leg muscles to move around, and it is known as the Stride Management apparatus which is worn around the waists, hips and thighs. As for the second apparatus, it is the Bodyweight Support device that looks rather painful for males to wear (as you can see on the right) if the height is not adjusted to suit the wearer. It will help you in your gait while assisting you in some heavy lifting - a perfect future Father's Day gift, perhaps?

Nintendo will launch this summer title in an attempt to spur Wii sales in Japan. Wii Sport Resort works with the Wii Motion Plus. The game is effectively 10 little games that includes Jet Ski, Frisbee throwing and sword fighting (as seen in this image). It reminds us of the "Decathlon" concept, although it not button-smashing this time. So, hit or miss? what's your take?

In an ideal world, all console should have access to Netflix. Fortunately it seems like we're heading there: a job posting at Netflix mentions an engineer with "deep experience developing and testing media rich applications on current generation gaming consoles." That's certainly enough to spark rumors about upcoming support for the PS3 and the Wii (see previous rumor). The Xbox 360 is already Netflix-friendly, thanks to its "PC" DNA that Netflix engineers know all too well. In the meantime, we're using PlayOn to stream Netflix to a PS3 (via a PC) and to be honest it works a lot better than the flash player on PC.

The keyboard at the office could be one of the dirtiest places you'll ever place your fingers on, and yet you don't notice - not until you get hold of the Medigenic keyboard. This device does not come with raised keys that are a sure trap for nasties to be housed, but will take on a flat keyboard design (complete with faux 3D key graphics just to get you in the mood) that can be wiped clean with hospital-grade disinfectants without a hitch. Apparently, the flat design is touted to offer touch typists “conventional keyboard-like performance” while a dedicated disable button helps prevent accidental key presses whenever you wipe the Medigenic. Heck, even a backlight function is thrown in for those low-light environments so that the patient can go on sleeping peacefully (hopefully not eternally!), while a warning light flashes whenever it is time for a clean up. Hospitals who are interested can check out the Medigenic keyboard that retails for around $140.

Anyone who has worked in a corporate environment has one day laughed at the super-expensive conference phone that sucks *and* costs a bomb. Kickerstudio has been working on this concept to change this hard reality. It tries to solve the most common issues and here’s their (partial) list:

* Synchronizes with calendars and contacts for one-tap dialing
* Quickly see who’s talking on a call and who wants to speak
* "Hand Raising" to indicate a desire to speak
* Recording and marking of calls
* Multi-line dialing
* Adjusting individual lines for the best overall conference call quality

We like how easy it is to dial everyone in, thanks to the pre-recorded contact info (with photo ID, see in the full post). Now let's hope that this will turn into a product. More info at kickerstudios.com. You’ve got a cool concept? Send it our way.

How badly do you want an unlocked iPhone 3G? Would you pay $799 for one? Well, if you really are that desperate, Buy.com is currently offering the device for that price. It isn’t mentioned whether it’s imported device from Hong Kong or Taiwan where Apple sells unlocked devices, but if you’ve got the extra money and want to use the iPhone 3G on another carrier (without jailbreaking), this might be the answer for you.

An update for Google maps has been released, and one of the main improvements is that Google Latitude finally works properly. In case you haven’t been in touch with Google Latitude, it’s a feature that keeps track of your current location and allows it to be shared with your social network, and now it can work in the background.

* Background location updates: Google Latitude background location updating has been fixed and allows you to continue updating your location automatically in the background even when Maps for mobile is closed.
* Auto-restart location updates: If you turn off your phone or it ran out of battery with automatic Latitude location updates enabled either in the background (see above) or with Maps left open, Latitude will respect this choice and automatically restart location updates in background mode when you next turn on your phone.
* Force location updates: Manually refreshing your Latitude friends list also forces the update of your own location if automatic detection is enabled.
* Login errors: Several fixes completed to address multiple causes of login errors for Latitude, such as invalid certificates.
* Backlight behavior: Your device backlight should turn off according to your system settings when Maps or Latitude is left open in the background. Previously, Latitude may have kept your backlight on when in the background.
* Internal error: Selecting a friend in Latitude to see more info and options will no longer cause internal errors on some devices.

Nokia must be enjoying the response that it’s getting for its 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia N97 touchscreen phones, as according to latest rumors, Nokia is busy working on at least 3 more touchscreen-enabled handsets. If the rumor is true, haptic feedback from Immersion Technologies will also be on the cards, and we might even be able to see some results as early as this fall. Don’t expect it to look like the device pictured here though, as that’s a Nokia concept phone.

We’ve certainly seen pictures of Nokia’s Aeon concept phone a few years back, and until now, it’s still an extremely desirable phone. Now another Nokia concept device has shown up at the recently-released Echelon Conspiracy film. It doesn’t look like the previous Aeon as we know it, but rest assured, it’s still mouth-watering. Will we actually be able to get a handset like the Nokia Aeon in the future? We certainly hope so.

We have word on the yet unreleased Nokia 5530 XpressMusic and a laundry list of its specifications, where the touchscreen handset will roll out sometime in September this year. This could probably be the phone that falls under one of the three touchscreen handsets that Nokia plans to release by this fall, and it is tipped to feature the following :-

* 2.9" touchscreen display
* Symbian S60 5th Edition
* Wi-Fi connectivity
* 3.2-megapixel camera
* 3.5mm headset jack
* Integrated FM radio with RDS
* 150MB internal memory
* microSD memory card slot

The 5530 XpressMusic will probably be the "baby" version of the 5800 that you see on the right, which in turn points toward a lower price (logically speaking of course).

There was a time when hearing about an 8 megapixel mobile phone camera would have inspired a look of disbelief and awe to the average mobile consumer, now it’s pretty much a ‘ho-hum’ syndrome. Nevertheless, for the photo buffs out there who like having a good camera in their mobile handsets, Samsung’s M8800 Pixon may just be the one for you. But truth be told, this is how it really fared. You can decide if my opinion on the handset is a valid argument for or against the purchase.
Before I begin let me just state, for the record, Samsung, unlike some of the other manufacturers doesn’t usually provide me with an ‘out-of-the-box’ handset. By that I mean it’s merely a test piece and I can’t say with certainty that the handset is in pristine condition or won’t have issues. But some things are quite standard and universal to all handsets of the same model, so here’s what I can tell you anyways.

Form Factor

It's a simple enough design. If you’ve seen one touchscreen handset you’ve pretty much seen 'em all. The large display, in this case 3.2-inches with a 240 x 400 pixel resolution, is a bit of an issue when in bright sunlight. It tends to be overly reflective if not held at the right angle. It has three standard buttons under the display – Call Take, End Call and the center circular one is a Return key. A VGA camera is located just near the light senor that’s right beside the earpiece.
On one side is a microSD card slot followed by a shortcut key and a screen lock button. Samsung’s proprietary universal port is located at the top which is actually a good idea in terms of placement as it makes it easy to plug in the hands-free (which incidentally is equipped with a 3.5mm socket and volume control for the Audio out or earphones) and carry it around in your pocket without making the handset wider than it already is. On the side are the Volume/Zoom and two dedicated keys – one to access the library for media (video and image only) files and the other a shutter release for the camera.
An LED flash accompanies the 8MP camera at the rear. The camera itself does tend to bulk up the handset a bit though.
The all Black Pixon with the lined sides is in no way a bad looking handset. But like I explained earlier, it doesn’t really create an impact because of the rather generic design that handset’s like it tend to embody. There's not much one can do about it though if you’re in the market for a totally touchscreen handset.
